Remediation is a study of contamination and architecture. Contamination not only of sediment, groundwater, soil and air; but contamination of history, precedence, form and conceptual ideas. A large scale, urban exploration on the former Fitzroy Gasworks site, it will investigate the narrative of Fitzroy North’s industrial, social and inner-city edge condition. Narrative of the site’s architectural ‘neighbours’ include both the current urban context and its contaminated sub-text. Implicated in the process is the political and economic struggles of Fitzroy North’s gentrification pressured by its proximately to Melbourne’s CBD.
