HEYA, I'M ZHILIANG YAN

AKA ROBBIE

头像.JPG

I'm currently a student studying1st year of Architecture at RMIT University. In this Semester I took on the journey of being a student in the studio called, "Re-Mediation". I am interested in the design concept in this studio of contamination & decontamination in architecture, where architecture either conflicts or being harmonious with its surroundings. These drew me into studying this studio where we research, explore and develop proposals to build a multifunctional compound project on such a unique land in Fitzroy: the Gasworks.

A NOT SO TYPICAL

CANTON BOY...

Born in Canton in 1999, I am a humble foodie just like any other typical Cantonese. I am not here to show off but I am always the 'neighbour's kid' type of boy as well: quiet, hardworking in studying & a goog-grader, having a 10th grade piano qualification plus an art lover. However, under this stereotype, there is an ambitious, rebellious beast. I always fascinated about something unrealistic and attempt to explore the unknown. This is not just about getting the hair dying as soon as I get 18, but the will to innovate. To me, finding & innovating something new is always the motivation to push me further. Without which, I will be easily procrastinated. This is why I decided to study Architectural design as my major in RMIT uni.

Daydreaming about designing fancy, unrealistic but bold designs in Architecture, is always the keen since my childhood. As I grow older, my view of the world influenced my understandings, for I learn more about design concepts, being environmentally friendly and improving space utilization. I gain quite an abundant amount of different experience, as I participating in an internship in architecture in my senior high and serving as an Art Teaching Assistant during the graduate gap months before uni.

Studying in abroad is a challenge to everyone, for it put yourself into an unknown area with a different cultural environment. For me, moving from my well-protected home to a city on the other half of the hemisphere, strive me to be able to face various situations, in particular the COVID pandemic. Personally, the new experiences motivate me and surprise me with new inspirations from a different perspective, a different cultural meaning, but also add more experience to my life. Overall, that's is just a brief narrative of myself and hope it crack you with a laugh if you feel like one.

SOME FUN FACTS...

Firstly,

IF you don't know how to pronounce my Pinyin name, just give up and call me ROBBIE. It doesn't worth the try as it just brains cell killer if you insist on making that attempt.

Secondly,

Not all guys from the southern part of China is short, I am 6'1'' and my parents aren't either from the north or have a tall gene, SO DON'T STEREOTYPE!

Thirdly,

We, Cantonese, don't actually 'Eat Fujian People' so don't look at us as we are manhunters...Yet we enjoy cooking & Cantonese dishes are top class in my heart!

Last but not least,

This may be cliches, but I just want to state the fact of being an art lover who spends his procrastinating time drawing some random thoughts and post them on a professional Instagram account @procrastinate.bubble. Follow me if u like to!

BEING A COOL KID ISN'T FUN
