Scale: 3.9 hectares
Used to have 3 large gasometers, pulled down in the 1970s
Used to be Coal plant /Also produce military hardware & ammonia production between the 1860s and 1940s

=> Led to contaminated soil with a depth of 12 meters:
coal tar, ammonia, cyanide and benzene
Surrounding Blocks are made of available to the Gasworks

Heritage

  • The porter shed will be relocated elsewhere

  • the valve house, remaining 19th century industrial building, local historical interest but subject to the HO211 (not register)

FITZROY CULTURE BACKGROUND:

  • Planning of Fitzroy: Unplanned (fortuitous), formed by the pipe track, gas work, railway

  • Not really attractive to the residences, as the settlement are forced by work pressure

  • No trace of aboriginal left in current plan, but some known for aboriginal camping

SUMMARY OVER THE DEMOGRAPHIC: Fitzroy, North Fitzroy & Collingwood.

There is a significant amount of unemployment within the community while more highly educated people at the same time. There is a lack of education in Primary & secondary Phase. Generally diverse culture while no religion is the main religious group. Transportation, mainly via car while walking is appreciated as well, followed by the tram. Unmarried individuals are popular.
