EDUCATION TYPOLOGY STUDY
In the first couple of weeks of 'Re-mediation' studio, we took on a research journey: on the Fitzroy Gasworks site, typology studies in the superblock area allocated as a group & the contamination model we find interesting within the area. These research deepen our understanding of the site background & indigenous culture, as well as typology concepts, laying a solid foundation for lateral design group work.
RESEARCH BRIEF
This exercise will contribute to the shared studio research narrative of Fitzroy North’s inner-city edge condition. Each Project Group has been allocated a Super Block around the Gas Works site. Within your block investigate the narrative of the following types of use. Interrogate your block locating exemplars of i.) Education (included physical education, recreation, sports clubs, libraries and public open space in this category. ii.) Commercial (include office, industrial and retail in this category) and Residential (include affordable housing and multi-residential in this category) Within each Research Group establish a whole-of-group conceptual drawing that highlights the significant findings within each block. Consider Atelier Bow-Wow’s Metalocus Park, Tokyo_ drawing below as an example of a well-edited composite drawing. It highlights the architectural elements that are significant to their themes. Like
the example, the drawing should be well edited and only show curated site information – you should be selective.
Additional Note: If you are working in the Educational Research Group you should consider extending your research beyond the Super Blocks to include the nearest primary schools, preschools/ kindergartens and high schools in each direction. These have a larger catchment area than that of the superblock extent.
TYPOLOGY : Education

ps: The diagram is drawn within the Educational Research group, led by Steffi Li. Detail example rhino models are made by, Steffi Li, Anson Chau, Ebony Harli, Su Wenxuan, Sebastian Toth, Rudi van Oorschot, Robbie Yan.
Examples in superblock 1
I am responsible for finding education/recreation example in superblock 1. The ones I find are, Project up Sports Club, Slow Clay Centre (Art Centre), Gold street Childcare Centre, Collingwood Children Centre, Melbourne Polytechnic Collingwood Campus Library.
Gold street Chilcare
-
The interesting gable roof, renovated by K20 Architect.
-
Upgrade the architect adds: two maternal child health spaces, a modern entry and administration facility; create a place that resonates for children and teachers; New entry captures the excitement of children (metaphor of a skipping child: a simple geometric triangle, which gains in colour and intensity) Add in a number of ESD initiatives such as solar PV cells, compost bins, increase water storage, thermally venting skylights, increased bike parking, high-level ventilation, LED lighting and daylight controls for auto-dimming, and indirect evaporation coolers designed and manufactured in Australia.

Collingwood Children Centre
-
Similar design language and composition to the Gold street Childcare: Use of triangle in the facade language
-
More traditional use of colour
-
use of solar panels on the roof

-
multistories with a design language of block stacking
-
bulky, a bit like a treasure chest, containing knowledges

Slow Clay Centre
-
really quirky front facade design for clay centre; maybe cus of the easy transportation of clay
-
located in a smaller street, quite unnoticeable
-
it looks like a contamination model of dispocession (warehouse to the studio)
