Exercise BRIEF

Consider the examples of massing models that we have added to Google Drive. Working in your Project Groups draw on your research to date, including the site narrative, typology investigations and contamination research to create initial massing models for the site. For now, the massing model should assign areas within your site to each typology as well as public space which will become the fourth element in your project.

Going back from all the iteration & the massing study we have done, we developed this iteration of the master planning. This iteration intends to not just finding the connections with the surroundings as the last iteration but also brings it back to the main theme of the studio: a study of contamination & remediation. As you might easily spotted in the drawing & sketch model below, we keep the Chris-cross-connection idea at the ground floor level connecting the nearby streets, as well as overhanging a sky bridge on top of George St. shortcutting from South of Alexandra Pde to Edinburg Garden. Another focus is our "Green Corridor"; showing the idea of natural contamination, as the greenery contaminates the buildings like a balance between mother nature and architecture. (The corridor element is taken from Dorothy concept study) Contamination is also shown in the sense of cross-programming, as different programs or typologies juxtapositioned, facing each other or close to the point of touching. They are connected through the green nature corridor at different levels, which people can circulate within each chunk of building, sharing the public services such as Fitzroy swimming pool and Smith’s reserve.

TRIALS

As a group, we develop several trials for the massing plan with the same base model but into various shapes & form to convey the key concept. Here are some of the screenshot of the trials we made.

ps: The iterations are modelled in Rhinoceros, by Zhiliang Yan (Robbie), Dorothy Tse, Jordan Chen (in order).

Each of us did an interpretation in Rhino. The difference between each trial is quite distinctive: Robbie's is bulkier looking, vertically developing each block, Stong contrast between blocks of building in Dorothy's while Jordan's is denser with a significant number of narrow streets lead to the central plaza. After discussion within the group, we decided to combine most of Dorothy's, with some from Robbie's and Jordan's creating the strong conflicts between each block.

hybrids & final iteration

For the Location of programs: much of the commercial block will be primarily situated facing southwards to Alexander Pde. This was done due to the primary commercial and retailed orientated smith street, which could act as a commercial extension as people could travel down smith street to more retail stores located in the site. The education block will be located on the corner of Smith Street and Queens Pde, this decision was mainly based on the fact that public transport connections such as the 546 bus route and the 86 Tram route runs which down Smith street and onto Queens Pde will be good opportunities for students to travel to the education facility. The residential will be located in small apartment chunks ranging in size dotted around the main nature hub of the site and down George St and its intersection between Queens Pde. The long pink chunk will be served as office tower providing a sound barrier from the Alexandra Pde.

green corridor idea

This circular area will act as the nucleus of the site, circulating people around the site which in turn brings the whole site to life, much like a human heart which pumps blood to the rest of the body. Most people will be inclined to follow the green corridor towards the centre of the site, as it is a major area of public space with a nature park surrounding the circular area, this also represents the idea of the natural green heart of the site. It varies in levels, for example, one person could enter from (x street) and end up at an elevated public space on the roof of a residential apartment. People are able to walk through with reduced use of elevators and lifts due to heavy pedestrian traffic  The green corridor will also be effective at reducing noise levels around the site as well as decorating the site with joyful impression.
